| Medicine Program |
Since 1997, Kumler Outreach Ministries has helped people with no health insurance coverage pay for prescriptions for acute conditions, such as pain or infection, or for chronic conditions, such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
Kumler's medicine program, which is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., is two-pronged: 1) emergency prescription needs and 2) long-term prescription needs.
Under the emergency prescription program, an individual brings a valid prescription to Kumler Outreach Ministries, meets with a staffer or volunteer who collects pertinent information (name, address, date of birth, Social Security number, etc.)and staff then approves the payment. The prescription is called into a partner pharmacy who fills the prescription and bills Kumler Outreach Ministries.
Each person accessing the emergency prescription program is allowed up to $100 worth of prescriptions during a six-month period as long as funds exist.
People with chronic conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure or asthma, who want to enroll in the charitable programs offered by pharmaceutical companies can get help from Kumler to successfully navigate the enrollment process. To qualify for help with the long-term program, a person must have a regular doctor to whom a drug company can send the medicine.
The person sets up an appointment with Kumler staff who then matches the person's prescription with the drug company(ies) offering help. With the necessary information from the patient (proof of need, etc.), staff fills out the enrollment forms, gets the patient's signature, hand-delivers the paperwork to the doctor for his/her signature and other necessary paperwork, and includes a stamped, addressed envelope to the pharmaceutical company.
Kumler Outreach Ministries covers the cost of necessary prescriptions while the person waits to learn if he/she has been accepted into a drug company's program. The staff also follows up to help people with enrollment renewals or to troubleshoot when problems occur.
Funding for the medicine program comes from a combination of grant dollars, private donations and support from the Springfield medical community, including St. John's Hospital and Memorial Medical Center.
